What is the Repeat Insult Patch Test?

The Repeat Insult Patch Test (RIPT), also known as Human Repeat Insult Patch Test, is the personal care products’ industry standard for determining allergy safety. The RIPT is a sensitization test used by personal care brands to assess the likelihood of allergic reactions, irritation and sensitization. Adapted from the Draize method (sensitization test on animals), the Human Repeat Insult Patch Test is widely recognized in the personal care industry and accepted by regulatory bodies worldwide.

This simple and relatively fast method of clinical testing is performed on a panel of 50-200 volunteer testers across a period of six weeks. In RIPT, the product being tested is applied to patches and adhered to the skin of the test subject’s back. The patches are applied for short intervals, repeatedly, over the course of the study. Skin reactions are observed and analyzed by dermatologists throughout the testing period to gauge the product’s potential for allergic reactions and confirm the products’ allergenicity.

Any personal care brands making safety claims on packaging must prove that the ingredients are safe for use regarding allergens and hypersensitivity, and the RIPT is one of the most widely-accepted ways to do so.

Repeat Insult Patch Test Requirements

Before new personal care products are marketed and released to the public, brands must comply with an extensive list of regulatory requirements and quality standards. Per the FDA, finished products and their ingredients must be adequately demonstrated as safe —  or include a Warning Statement on the product labeling.

As brands push to differentiate themselves with more innovative products and formulations, newer, more obscure ingredients are being introduced. As a result, the risk of exposure to potential allergens increases.

At the same time, consumers are looking for assurances that there will be no negative side effects before they buy. So, brands are striving to reassure consumers about product safety on their packaging. But it is not just marketing —  personal care brands must comply with standardized regulations in order to use specific safety terminology on their labels. Products that have language on their labels such a “dermatologically tested,” “non-irritating,” “suitable for sensitive skin,” or “hypoallergenic” must be able to verify their claims through product safety testing.

In many cases, brands will rely on the Human Repeat Insult Patch Test (RIPT) to demonstrate safety compliance.

Does Your Personal Care Product Pass the Repeat Insult Patch Test?

Many categories of personal care products can be subjected to the RIPT, including anti-aging cream, wet wipes, moisturizer, makeup and sunscreen. To label a product as suitable for customers with sensitive skin, the product must be tested and pass a recognized safety test, such as RIPT.

Depending on the panel size, products that successfully complete the RIPT, may support the following label claims:

  • Allergy Tested
  • Dermatologist Tested
  • Clinically Approved
  • Clinically Tested
  • Non-irritating
  • Hypoallergenic
