5 Considerations Before Choosing An Organic Emulsifier

 July 17, 2019

Choosing the right organic emulsifier for your cosmetic formulation isn’t hard, but it does require some special considerations. No single emulsifier will be suitable for every situation. The solution will depend on many things including, the purpose of your product, its combination with other ingredients, and requirements for your product policy (vegan, palm-free, GF, etc.).

5 Things To Know About Choosing An Organic Emulsifier

Naturally, water and oil do not mix. However, emulsifiers serve the function to make them combine. Let’s take a deeper look at five points to consider before choosing the right organic emulsifier for your beauty brand.

1. Oil-in-Water or Water-in-Oil

When oil and water are mixed together, they will either form an oil-in-water (o/w) or water-in-oil (w/o) emulsion. Both have their own unique chemical properties and applications for personal care products.

  • O/W emulsion: contains a low oil concentration and is often used in moisturizing products.
  • W/O emulsion: contains a high oil concentration and is often used in products designed for those with dry or sensitive skin.

2. Other Ingredients

Makers of organic beauty products, frequently work with plant oils and waxes. In some instances you may use fractionated oils. Make sure that the organic emulsifiers you use are suitable for your desired ingredients.

3. pH Range

All regular and organic emulsifiers have their own pH range best suited for different applications. Deviation from that range can cause instability, or changes in texture or viscosity. This can directly affect the desired purpose of your personal care product.

4. Hot vs Cold Process

It’s important to note that different emulsifiers have different heat sensitivities. Some emulsifiers allow you to utilize a cold blending process used for beauty products. However, if you need to emulsify coconut oil or another ingredient that is solid at room temperature, you’ll need to utilize a hot blending process.

5. Specific Markets

Depending on your target customers, you may need to consider specific criteria for your emulsifier. For example, becoming kosher-certified will require that your beauty brand complies with a strict policy of kosher laws. Or by distinguishing your product as vegan, you’ll need to ensure your emulsifier does not contain animal derived ingredients such as milk protein or beeswax.
