Beyond SPF: Consumers Want Infrared Protection

Many sunscreen ingredients are formulated to offer protection from the damaging UVA/UVB rays. However, consumers today want more. They are looking for skin care products with a restorative formula that provides infrared protection.

Protecting Against Skin Damaging Infrared

It is well known that ultraviolet rays from the sun can cause damage to the skin. UVA rays are one main cause of fine lines, wrinkles, and dark spots. UVB rays can cause painful sunburns and lead to skin cancer.

Although invisible to the human eye, infrared radiation (IR) rays actually travel deeper into the skin than UVA and UVB rays. They pass through the epidermis and dermis into the subcutaneous layer. Accounting for over 54% of total solar radiation reaching the Earth, infrared rays have also been proposed to be deleterious to human skin.

Besides the sun, infrared rays may also come from less-obvious places, like electronic devices such as smartphones, computers, and tablets with strong blue light waves. This means it can potentially generate skin-damaging free radicals that accelerate skin aging and cause collagen breakdown.

Since consumers are exposed to so much infrared energy on a daily basis, they want skin care products that offer infrared protection to defend against premature photoaging and skin cancer.

What Ingredients Support Infrared Protection?

Certain skincare ingredients are considered an effective photoprotective strategy against the impacts of infrared radiation.

Antioxidants like Vitamin C, E, and Copper may help to neutralize IR.

  • Omega-CH-Activator® from GfN, for example, provides a mixture of amino acids, free radical scavengers, and copper-peptides designed to protect the skin and activate cell metabolism.

Plant extracts such as phenolic, carotenoids, and flavonoid compounds have been shown to provide protection.

  • Elderflower Extract from Selco is a botanical extract rich in bioflavonoids and tannic acid. It works to combat free radicals, soothe skin, and stabilize cell membranes.

A large number of botanicals are used as inactive agents for preserving, emulsifying, moisturizing and smoothing sunscreen to further protect the skin. These typical varieties are Aloe vera, tomatoes, pomegranate, green tea, cucumber, African tulip tree, Dendropanax morbifera, and more.

Pomegranate Seed Oil from Selco is an extract rich in fatty acids, which revitalizes, smoothes and soothes the skin.
