Blue light skin protection is taking on significance as consumers seek reliable products to protect their body’s largest organ from premature signs of aging. To meet these demands, savvy companies are pursuing new antioxidant-rich formulations that protect and preserve skin…and generate more sales.

What is Blue Light?

Blue light (also known as High Energy Visible or HEV light) is emitted naturally from the sun (HEV is adjacent to UV light on the spectrum) and electronic devices such as smartphones, computers, tablets, TVs and even LED and fluorescent lighting.

Blue light has the shortest wavelength, but can produce the greatest amount of skin damage.

How Does Blue Light Affect the Skin?

We’ve known for some time that blue light can negatively affect vision and compromise the quality of sleep by disrupting our natural circadian rhythm and melatonin secretion. We now know that blue light can also induce cellular damage and pose potential skin problems via the generation of free radicals.

Some studies link blue light as being a major source of oxidative stress by forming reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS). This has been shown to weaken the epidermal barrier and cause hyperpigmentation in skin which can contribute to signs of aging much like UVA exposure can.

The biggest problem with blue light is that it penetrates deeper into the skin than compared to UVA or UVB light. Unlike a sunburn, the effects aren’t immediate. But, they will show up over time by accelerating the aging process, wrinkling, dark spots and sagging skin.

From work to leisure time, as consumers become more connected to digital devices than ever before, blue light exposure is becoming the center of the beauty industry’s radar.

With research showing the skin damaging effects that blue light can have, many consumers are looking for ways to shield themselves with their skin care.
